preferred power pack by John, an FBO from Barre VT USA
Pros: quick re-energizing, easy to use. Cons: not as long life at the bigger packs available for some othe radios Review: Mostly, I've become disenchanted with rechargeables. With an alkaline battery pack you can replace dead batteries in a minute and be back in business. Unlike the rechargeables that take a min 1 hr to recharge, slowly lose the lifespan and can't be quickly recovered when you may not have the time to recharge.

Review: The belt clip does not fit and cannot be used without modifying the product (enlarging the slot for the belt clip).

The IC-A23 expects 9:6V, not 6x1.5V=9V :-( by Roger F. from Lige, Belgium
Pros: The box fits in the device - you can use it in reception mode Cons: Not really compatible (too low voltage => triggers the protection) Review: As soon as transmission is started, the voltabe of an alcaline battery drops. With 6x1.5V, the power supply is already under the nominal voltage with new batteries. When you start transmitting, it gets worse: the "low power" flag quickly starts to flash and the IC-A23 switches off! I comntacted ICOM on this issue, and here is their Email reply: "There are no settings for use with the BP-197, I would recommend if you have a way to connect the radio to DC on the plane to use the CP-12L cigarette adaptor with filter or the OPC-254L with filter to operate that A23." I asked ICOM why they flag the BP-197H as compatible with the IC-A23 in such case, but did not get a reply (yet)...

This should be in the ICOM packaging. by Slojohn from Belleville, Illinois
Pros: Good economical back-up to rechargable battery Cons: Cover does not close well when loaded. Review: This is a great back-up to the NiMH battery supplied with my A-23. Its a little hard to load as the cover does not seat well with the AA batteries installed.
