Worth the investment in binders

  • By A Customer from PA USA on Wednesday, August 04, 2010
  • Pros: 14-day updates; compact for the coverage area
  • Review: I used NACO charts for several years and took the plunge this year and tried out Jepp charts. I will not go back to the NACO charts. Jepps are much more compact compared to the government charts. In 5 binders, I have complete coverage East of the Mississippi. The same NACO coverage took much more volume and was a hassle to wrangle on long trips. The Jepp paper is thin, but is durable. I only have one enroute chart (the one that covers my home field) that is showing some signs of wear, but all the other enroute charts are fine despite being folded and unfolded quite a bit. The zig-zag index fold of the enroute charts is useful too: you can quickly go directly to the panels you want. The approach chart format is a little different than NACO, but, does have some advantages (e.g. key aspects of procedure are bolded in plan view). The best thing about the Jepp approach charts is airport page (10-9) which has everything you need to know to operate in/out of the specific airport on it: standard & alternate mins, obstacle DPs, LASHO, lighting details, A/P notes and more. In the NACO pubs, this information is scattered in the A/FD, the beginning of the approach plate set, and the approach charts themselves. If you travel much, the convenience and compactness of the Jepps will spoil you.
